About the program:
All fire departments, regardless of structure size will struggle with span of control issues. This happens most often when they get comfortable and even complacent by relying on one individual to manage the incident without any help. Most of the time the incident commander has no one to hand off any aspect of the incident. It is often said “what you don’t give a away, you own.” That also applies to fireground. All to often the IC is overwhelmed with no one help him.
If we look closer at the dilemma we realize there are some simple solutions. One solution is to have mutual aid chief officers responded automatically on an incident. In doing so, officers support each other on every call. The benefits to this are immense. Rather than waiting for fire to grow to two or three alarms and then hope another chief officer may arrive, creating a command team on all routine incidents will provide familiarity with operations. It also essens the likelihood of critical information being missed or mishandled.
In this program we will help you build your incident command team. There really is no right or wrong way to do this. Instead, it will be a compilation of best practices adapted to your locale to make this system work. After the details are framed out, it’s time to put it in practice. Under the leadership of one of our command instructors, we will mentor students as they manage fireground incidents with the benefit of an incident command team!
