An incident commander and firefighter’s worst nightmare… the basement fire. Basement fires are often the culprit in line of duty death firefighters. Working a fire that has not been identified as a basement fire will surely result in a catastrophic event. This program will provide an depth review of strategic and tactical considerations for basement fires.

The Goal
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to recognize the multiple hazards presented by a basement fire while demonstrating how to interact in and conduct a coordinated fire attack.

The student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • The inherent hazards of below grade fires
  • Building construction features of structures with basements
  • The value of pre-plans and providing a good size ups
  • Recognition of smoke characteristics
  • Incident command and standard operating guidelines
  • Strategy and Tactics for basement fires for the Company Officer and the Incident Commander
  • How to facilitate a well- coordinated fire attack with the resources at hand for a positive outcome
